An American Airlines flight en route from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to New Delhi was diverted to Rome on Sunday due to a potential security threat, which was later deemed non-credible.
Flight 292, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner carrying approximately 200 passengers, landed safely at Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci International Airport around 11:15 a.m. ET.
The aircraft was escorted by Italian Air Force fighter jets as a precautionary measure.
Upon landing, law enforcement conducted a thorough inspection and cleared the plane for its onward journey. Passengers underwent additional security screenings, and the flight is scheduled to continue to New Delhi after an overnight stay in Rome to accommodate required crew rest.
