From Speed to the Deep: The SS United States Begins Its Final Voyage as an Artificial Reef

The iconic SS United States, a record-breaking ocean liner from the 1950s, is set to become the world’s largest artificial reef. After spending nearly 30 years docked in Philadelphia, the ship began its final journey on February 19, 2025, heading to Mobile, Alabama, for a six-month cleaning process to remove hazardous materials. Once prepared, it will be intentionally sunk off the coast of Florida near Destin-Fort Walton Beach, transforming into a marine habitat and a top-tier diving destination.

After sinking the ship will become a artificial reef.

This project aims to support marine life while boosting tourism in the region, ensuring the ship’s legacy lives on—not as a forgotten relic, but as a thriving underwater ecosystem.
